face.jpg
Naaah….. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder for we are the ones who define what is beautiful and what is not. But skin can be used to asses ones health for any problems internally manifests itself on your skin. Red healthy skin is a sure sign of good physical build-up. Burned skin is a sign of too much exposure to the sun thus there may be a higher risk of skin cancer and other health problems. Scaly skin, and that person may lack some essential vitamins and minerals in his/her diet that might need adjustment. Calloused skin may result from excessive wear and tear on that particular part of the body which may be due to occupational hazards allowing better protection in the afflicted area and many more. So skin is not only a sign of sure beauty but a mirror of who we are and how healthy we are on the inside.

Natural Skin Care Products

nature.jpg
We’ve all heard of the natural healing of plants and other naturally occurring minerals and elements. Coconut oil has long been used as a moisturizer by many a seafaring cultures and it is also good insect bite treatment. Many such extracts have been discovered and integrated in the many skin care products we use today. People have begun to realize the importance of using natural stuff where else from nature. That is why habitat protection of our remaining rain forests is vital for all plants have stuff in them that can help us in one way of the other. Burn them, destroy them and we loose the ability to discover otherwise life-saving derivatives that really work.

Drug-Resistant Staphylococcus Infections

drugresiststaphDoctors are finding a very alarming trend that has been going on for quite sometime, injuries to the skin that get infected are now found to be healing not only longer but worse, are becoming host to once rare forms of staph infections. Called MSRA, these forms of infections used to be common in athletes or with the condition known as athlete’s foot, with bacteria commonly found in the infected skin and within in-grown toe nails. Today however, they are being found more and more commonly in regular scrapes and wounds that used to be easy to treat with common antibiotics so people with wounds that take longer to heal than normal should get them checked so they are eliminated and a new regimen of antibiotics could be prescribed. The Healing Capabilities of Touch …. Really !

healingtouchIt seems that the healing touch is more than an old wives tale and scientists have the proof that touch has it’s own set of receptors that is directly linked to the brain. This might explain why babies calm down at the touch of their mother/father or pain seems to go away when you get stroked by a loved one. Scientists have found touch receptors that are different from the ones we normally use for the sense of touch. The findings warranted more research into the amazing ability of the human body to take a sense such as touch, coupled with some other physiological abilities to heal itself on it’s own without intervention. Skin care myths busted!

We people nowadays are wiser about seeing straight through a bad pick-up line. But when it comes to beauty, there are still some falsehoods that we take seriously. When after all, it was just a big joke. So don’t be stupid and get ready to wise up. This is one of the skin care myth that we are use to:

The myth: Using more of a product will make it take effect faster. The truth is that using handfuls of product would not do your any favors. Slathering more of a product to your body doesn’t result in more immediate result. Applying to much may cause skin irritations or allergic reaction, since some beauty products contain active ingredients like vitamin C, retinol, and benzoyl peroxide. Watch out if you’re using something that contains these. By just, applying a thin layer of it is enough to cover the area you’re treating. If you’re using a retinol cream. For example, a pea-sized dab will do the trick.

Sun block Dangers

sunblock.jpgIt may be the best protection for your skin, but do you know that sun block may contain agents that can counteract with other medication taken internally causing other health problems? You might have to stay out of the sun altogether if certain drugs you take, contains photo-sensitizing compounds so consult your doctor for any advice before deciding on using sun block and other skin protection products. Do not forget other parts of the body such as the eyes and lips which can also sustain damage from the suns UV rays. Always consult your doctor especially if you have other medical conditions which are being treated by drugs and other medications.

Health Warnings and Advisories – Doing Little

uvwarning.jpgPeople are some of the most stubborn living beings on earth for statistics show that almost 30% of all adults still go outdoors without using ample sunscreen in spite of well publicized warnings of the damage skin and the resulting skin cancer can cause due to over exposure to the sun. About 1.5 million new cases are diagnosed each year and a few thousand will result in death from skin cancer alone. Even repetitive warnings are not heeded by adults and also children who need more protection for their skin. Research is showing that severe sunburn in childhood can increase the likelihood of contracting skin melanomas and the other forms of skin cancer in adult life. So heed those ads and warnings, they are in fact for your safety and health.

Have Sunscreen on – Can stay longer under the sun

uvbrays.jpgNope, experts say that the protective effects of sunscreen are having a false sense of security for people who do use them making them think they can stay longer under the sun with it. People have long been advised to avoid direct exposure to the sun’s harmful rays between 10am and 4pm when the sun is high in the sky and obstacles provide little protection if none at all. Do not wear dark colored clothes for they absorb more of the suns rays like getting slowly roasted in your own clothes. Use light colored and if possible sun protective gear (clothes, wide brimmed caps and hats) whenever possible. Use sunscreen for everyday activities such as your daily jog around the block when the sun is out and bright. Research also shows that sunscreen is best applied in a thick consistent manner (like buttering toast) and should not be rubbed into the skin as previously used. This lessens their effectivity to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays increasing the risk of contracting skin cancer.

Tanning Lotions and Sunscreen

tanninglotions.jpgsunscreen-lotion.jpgUsing tanning lotions and sunscreen together, you get the desired skin tone while protecting your skin from overcooking under the sun. Using Tanning booths especially if the area where you live in has long winter weather and having light skin tone makes you look live you’ve seen a ghost. Opt for the natural process while you use ample protection but if you feel the urge to use these tanning booths, use the same protection as you would if you were under the sun on the beach. So remember that healthy skin tone does not signify healthy skin at all and that you should use sunscreen with your tanning lotion to get the best protection from the suns harmful UV rays.

Skin Cancer : On the rise

skinc3.jpg There are many cases of skin cancer that are discovered each year and a fraction of those do lead to death due to many factors. Skin Melanomas if left untreated can spread and worse infect underlying tissue and cause irreparable damage to the human organs. Early detection and treatment is the only solution so people have to be aware of signs to look for when dealing with this health risk. Reddened itchy skin with sores that do not go away, tenderness of a particular area of skin that is usually exposed to the sun, all these symptoms can be signs of some skin problem and worse a skin melanoma. The condition is curable but as said early detection is the key.
